Heceta's Beacon

from $30.00

Since 1894, the Heceta Head Lighthouse has been a guide for people navigating the waters off the Oregon Coast. Her name comes from Spanish Explorer, Don Bruno de Heceta, who was part of an expedition to solidify Spain's claim to Alaska and the PNW.

The area has a long history with the Siuslaw Tribe, and was well known for its hunting and fishing, long before the arrival of European settlers. In 1775, Heceta and the crew of his ship, the Santiago, made it as far north as what is currently the border between the USA and Canada.

During this exploration, the area was marked on their maps due to the shallow waters and rocky outcroppings. In 1892, construction began, and was finished in 1893. The lighthouse was first lit in 1894, and her light continues to guide seafarers on dark and cloudy nights to this day.
